Tom Lee sits beneath an overhang and watches the raindrops fall. May Day celebrations had just ended for James B. Edwards Elementary, and he's proud.

Lee has served as principal since the Mount Pleasant school's founding in 1981. He's seen all 27 annual May Day events, and said he believes the one May 23 was exceptional because it focused on the language arts, music and dance.

The entire fourth-grade class dressed as pirates and performed a grammatically themed musical, which tested their knowledge about the rules of grammar. Bryce Winkler, 10, played the captain's first mate and led the search for a buried treasure — the eight parts of speech.
