Webber Payne’s voice makes jagged cuts across the air. The stubble on his chin remembers when he opened his shop that morning, even before the sun showed face. And at 52 years of age — and more than 30 years in the business — this small-town florist claims he doesn’t keep plants in his house.

But he makes his rounds every morning. Water this. Water that. He does it silently.

Webber Payne does not talk to his plants. Neither does he play music for them, at least, not intentionally.
