After a year of collecting stories and talking to some incredible people, Tony Gonzalez and I have finally published a six-page special section in The News Virginian documenting the Hispanic community in Waynesboro.

The series was approached from the inside out. As we attempted to learn the language and make friends with the city's many Hispanics, we'd meet new people and find new story ideas constantly.

Along the way, we reported about struggles with the immigration system, the services available to Spanish-speakers, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the changing culture in Hispanic families as their children entered American schools.

Now, in a special section designed by Katie Gonzalez, Tony and I explore the first generation of Waynesboro Hispanics, who stand on the brink of transition.

Read the stories over at The News Virginian.
