A 56-year-old man pushing his bicycle across the street died Friday when he was hit by a car at U.S. 92 and Combee Road.

James William Galey, of 2412 Haywood St., in Lakeland, was crossing the intersection headed north about 1:30 p.m. when he was hit by a 1994 Ford Escort driven by Tashica W. Smith, 34, of 1038 Walker Road, in Lakeland, deputies said.

Traffic backed up more than a mile down Combee Road as several Polk County deputies marked the scene with orange spray paint, stepping over granola bars and bananas the bicyclist had just purchased from a Winn-Dixie super market.

Other deputies wrote down witness accounts.
