Family struggles in wake of shootings

Determined to stay strong, Carlos Lopez will not surrender to the devil.

"I'm done with it; the devil's not going to destroy my family no more. He's taken too much from me already," he said Monday.

Still reeling from the June 4 double-homicide at his mother's house, Lopez said the death of his sister, 15-year-old Marta Maria Negron, haunts him. He sees her when he dreams. He finds her in the face of his son, born the night of the shooting.

Sitting beneath the carport of his father's house on Harris Street in southeast Lakeland, Lopez shook his head at the thought of the loss and the man charged by police with the crime — his father.
