Sitting alone in a chilly Roanoke McDonald’s, Jonathan Craft looked into the screen of his phone, into the eyes of a baby.

“They said her heart was really strong,” Craft said, his voice soft and careful.

He spoke in the past tense, but his daughter’s heart never lost its strength. Even at the tragic end of her 13-month life, Veralee Craft’s last act — that of an organ donor — would be a kind one.
